Clusterfunk Collective presents Take Five: Amerigo Gazaway [Interview]

 photo takefive001_amerigogazaway_500_zpse0d00f0b.png

In our newest series, we pose five questions to seminal artists, musicians, and other creatives to expose some of the lesser known elements of each. "Take Five" to tap into the talent beyond the surface.

For our first installment, we caught up with Amerigo Gazaway - the audio architect behind Bizarre Tribe: A Quest To The Pharcyde and the clever composer of Fela Soul - to touch on his tour, his inspiration and his plan for what's next.

1. How do you decide which artists to revisit, rework, and remix?

Musically I think I just go through different phases. It might be Afrobeat, or Disco, or brazilian music or whatever I'm feelin at the time. As far as vocals go, It really just depends on what acapellas I can get a hold of. Recently I've been working with The Goodwill Projects who has been helping me create "Do-it-yourself" acapellas using a unique method of phase inversion. It's truly amazing what you can do with technology these days.

2. Given your recent departure from Gummy Soul, do you have any plans to start another label?

Not at the moment. I do have plans for collaborating with other artists. I also have plans of starting something new, but not a record label in the traditional sense.

3. Although most do not know, your father is legendary jazz trumpeter Gary “El Buho” Gazaway. Do you have any plans to work with him?

Definitely. I've already started experimenting with remixing some of his work, but I would love to have him featured on one of my future projects. I am also helping out with the release of an album he recorded with Delta blues legend Cedell Davis. I may be doing some remixes for that project as well.

4. In your opinion, who is the most prolific artist of the last ten years?

Prolific? I guess I'm more of a "quality over quantity" kind of guy. For hip- hop I would say some of the emcees who also produce like Oddisee, or maybe Madlib. Or even Big Krit. Those dudes put in work. Making great music is just second nature to them.

5. You are touring during the last quarter of the year, but there are no Bay Area shows currently listed on the itinerary. Do you have your sights set on any West Coast stops?

I would love to come visit the West Coast. I may be doing a presentation at the University of Southern California this fall. If that comes into fruition then I am going to try to book some shows around that date. We'll see what happens.

BBC1 Interviews Kanye West [Video]

Love him or hate him, Kanye West knocked it out of the park with every element of his polemical project, Yeezus. Listeners can touch and taste what he dubs "today's textures" without losing sight of the sample-heavy, drum-loaded and violin-laced sounds of 808s and Graduation. In his sit-down with Zane Lowe, he seems comfortable enough to be candid about not only his creative process, but also the cultural, political and social issues that contributed to the content of his newest creation.

At the same time, there are moments in which he sounds more like Phil Knight (not necessarily a plus) than Kanye West. As a brand owner, his obsessive aspirations are in some ways understandable, but the conundrums within his communication is enough to choke on.

Still, the discussion delves into a surplus of subjects and makes for a great break away from the norm.

From Mello Music Group:

The Black Opera is back again changing perceptions and smashing stereotypes. Finding themselves in the generation gap between the hip-hop pioneers & the new era of musicians, The Black Opera's new mixtape "80z Babiez To The 2Gz [The ExperiMix]" reinforces the unwritten law of creating: there are no rules.

Boardwalk Empire: Sounds Of The Onyx [Mix]

 photo soundsoftheonyx_zps3c850d99.jpg

From HBO:

HBO’s acclaimed drama series Boardwalk Empire presents 'Sounds of The Onyx', a promo-only music project celebrating the show’s upcoming fourth season and highlighting rare jazz recordings from the Prohibition Era, remixed by some of the best hip-hop/urban music producers of today. A joint collaboration between HBO, Giant Step, ABCKO Records and Sony Music Entertainment, the full project will be available exclusively via Sound Cloud streaming starting September 16th, two weeks after the release of this season’s official soundtrack, 'Boardwalk Empire Volume 2: Music From The HBO Original Series' (ABCKO Records). The title of the promo project ('Sounds of The Onyx') reflects the home of season four’s musical showpieces, the Onyx Club – a new nightclub run by Chalky White that is featured prominently in the new season.

The remixes utilize vintage 1920s recordings, with the exception of Pete Rock who remixed one of the new tracks from the official soundtrack: a cover version of the classic composition “Sugarfoot Stomp” performed by Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks, who serve as the Boardwalk Empire house band. The Pete Rock remix is also available as a free download: Boardwalkempire – Vince-giordano-the-nighthawks

The other source tracks for this project are almost a century old, yet the spirit of musical fusion, lyrical signification and cultural revolution embodied in the original works truly form the roots of modern American music and DJ culture, from hip-hop to EDM. The featured remixers worked off of original recordings from prohibition-era legends Eva Taylor & Clarence Williams’ Blue Five, Ethel Waters, Lloyd Scott & His Orchestra, Jim Jackson and Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Ten Orchestra, breathing new life into their songs for the gangsters, heroes, and club-denizens of today. The diverse roster of contemporary producers involved include DJ Jazzy Jeff, Om’Mas Keith, Shafiq Husayn, JayCeeOh and B-Sides and Tall Black Guy.

Preservation: SePtember 1200 [Instrumental Album]

 photo preservationseptember1200_zps539aee8a.png

From Mon Dieu Music:

SePtember 1200 is a 12-track instrumental album inspired by Preservation’s sharing of the same birth date – September 12th – as the one and only Barry White. The concept of the album is based on material sourced from the maestro's discography and produced solely on the 10-second sampling time of the classic drum machine, the SP-1200. The result is an outstanding 30-minute presentation of Preservation’s approach to constructing albums with a deeply personal touch that takes the listener on a journey of styles and moods.

All These Fingers: Rhodes Collection [EP]

 photo atf_rhodescollection_zpsc3e182d9.png

From ATF:

Introduced in 1965, the Rhodes changed the sound and look of popular music forever. Its inventor, Harold Rhodes, once remarked that, "I can hear my piano played six or seven times every half an hour on the FM station I listen to each morning". That statement is still true today in the sounds of hip hop, funk, jazz, rock...you name it. These compositions (played almost exclusively on a Rhodes Stage MKII) are a tribute to the most beautiful of keyboard instruments.

Mac Miller: a moment in time (vol. 1) [Video]

Say what you want about Mac Miller, but it is difficult to deny that he is artistically above-average. Although he basks in the limelight, he seems to shine much brighter when simply left to his own devices to define however he feels at the time in whatever fashion he deems fit. This (what we hope to be) new web series accomplishes that through his most concise approach yet, a moment in time.
