Van Gogh Self-Portrait Really His Brother [Art]

vangogh_selfportrait_reallytheo_2011

From Yahoo News:

Art researchers at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum said Tuesday they have "discovered" a work by Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh -- long thought to have been a self-portrait -- was in fact a picture of his younger brother Theo.

"According to current opinion, Vincent van Gogh never painted his brother Theo, on whom he was dependent," the Van Gogh Museum said in a statement.

But senior researcher Louis van Tilborgh now believed the 1887 painting of a man wearing a light-coloured hat and a dark blue jacket was in fact Van Gogh's brother Theo, Vincent's junior by five years.

"The conclusion is based on a number of obvious differences between the two brothers," said the museum, pointing out dissimilar features including the neatness of the subject's beard and his round-shaped ear, "something Vincent did not have."

"The form and colour of Theo's beard, more ochre than red, is also an indication" as well as the man's "eye-colour and the style in which he was dressed supports the new insight," the museum said.

"The portrait matches pictures of Theo," Van Tilborgh told the Dutch news agency ANP.

Theo van Gogh died six months after his older brother shot himself in a wheatfield at the age of 37 in Auvers, France, in July 1890.

The new investigation's results are published in a 600-page catalogue, put together by Van Tilborgh and three other researchers at the museum, which houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and letters.

Radiohead: Staircase [Video]

We have to admit being perplexed by this Radiohead album. We read somewhere a few months prior to the release of King Of Limbs that the album would be more influenced by hip-hop than past endeavors, the author indicating that Thom Yorke had formed a newfound obsession with the genre and was experimenting with new sounds. However, upon purchasing, we quickly realized that was not the case, and although not a bad album by any means, it is absolutely not what we expected.

Nonetheless, the group has premiered a new track, Staircase, as part of their Live From The Basement feature on BBC.

We first spotted JIN shortly after he dropped the infamous Learn Chinese, a hilarious spin on the tolls of an Asian rapper. It was obvious he had serious skill, but homie fell by the wasteside along with everyone else associated with Ruff Ryders at that time. Yet he kept building. Although he has not necessarily garnered the mainstream success that he was once projected to, he appears more comfortable rolling out solid (and consistent) JIN joints to a smaller, but loyal, fanbase. Shoot For The Moon (available on iTunes), is evidence of that.

Cookbook & DJ Revolution: Original Recipes [Mixtape]

djrevolution_cookbook_2011

From ASB Records:

CookBook, who is one of the founding members of the legendary independent hip-hop group L.A. Symphony, will be releasing his latest solo album, Original Recipes, July 12th on ASB Records. In anticipation of Original Recipes he’s teamed up with DJ Revolution of The World Famous Wake Up Show to create the Original Recipes Mixtape, which is AVAILABLE TODAY (May 10th). The mixtape features a collection of some of CookBook’s best work to date mixed, chopped, cut, and blended by one of hip-hop’s most talented turntablists.

“CookBook’s music is needed in this time,” Revolution explains, “it’s a breath of fresh air in hip-hop. He can do all the hard, tough guy raps, but chooses to make the music fun for the listener and relatable at the same time.”

Fans of CookBook’s music know that no topic is ever off the table. He explores a broad range of emotions, touching on everything from relationships, to success, to vision, to enduring the ups and downs of the industry, and he does so with an energy that is unmatched in today’s music scene.

California hip-hop heads have loved what CookBook’s served up to them for the past decade-plus. Now it’s time for everyone to get a taste of his Original Recipes.

El-P f. Nocando: Time Won't Tell (Remix) [Video]

The last El-P video that we featured is still one of the highest rated posts on this site. Even now, almost a year after the fact, at least one individual still finds his/her way there daily. And why not? Have you heard Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 front to back? Call it genius, but that's undoubtedly an understatement. At points political (but never passive) the mixx makes the listener think without thinking. The sounds permeate the subconscious and siphon out sanity, leaving in its place a maniacal mix to mangle the mind.

14KT: 14KillaTape [Mixtape]

14kt_14killatape_2011

Straight up…this is that raw ish. Slaps. Face Twisters. Hard beats. All these joints were made in a span of 08’-11’. It all started when I first got into the Red Bull Beat Battle in Detroit end of 08’. I was never known as a beat battle type producer and believe it or not, I actually don’t like battling with beats. However, that was my first time ever battling with beats. Knowing I was battling, I definitely found myself in a different frame of mind when I sat down to make joints in the lab. While in the lab, my motivation was making beats that I would have HATED if my opponent played them against me. I took a collection of beats where I had that mind state and mixed them with other beats I made during that time period. I’m setting this Killer Tape off with the first joint I ever made in a beat battle mind state and the rest is history. I got a new nickname under my belt now, 14KillaTape… haha.
