Childish Gambino: Fire Fly [Video]

Thanks to GFUNK, we've been listening a little closer to Childish Gambino as of late, particularly his Royalty mixtape. At first, we found his flow a little to Kanye-ish, feeling as if he were unnecessarily reaching to be received as the next rebel. Yet, upon closer examination, it's evident that the essence of his success lies not in his lines (though not to undermine) but rather hides behind the less obvious elements, particularly his ear for electronica. Fire Fly, for example, opens with a student/skateboarder cooking chemicals in a lab, followed by an image of a planet that seems to close for comfort and quite frankly reminds us of Melancholia. Nevertheless, his approach is fresh, and in no way resembles any of the run of the mill rubbage that has hit our inbox as of late and for that he should be commended.

RQ Away: #AS3.2: Amygdala [Mixtape]

The peaceful little moth was sitting under my non functioning car while I put air in my bike tires. The species is 'Giant Leopard Moth' or Hypercompe scribonia, what you may not see(click the picture for a closer look) amidst the obviously black dotted white wings is a small cluster of furry blue dots which compliment black and white and blue legs, and a dark blue abdomen featuring orange markings. The ride was cancelled due to the very storm this moth preemptively hid from. The moth's presence seemed to parallel my thoughts today. A could be visual spectacle hiding under a car for safety in a storm. The parallel comes in the sense of sometimes one's potential isn't or can't be reached due to a passing "storm" be it internal or act of nature, personally these storms are frequent and they seem to come from places that should be mental and emotional oases. As a DJ, my current mission is to present music new or not to those who need to hear it, giving new light to tracks and artist whenever possible. In this instance I may have spilled some emotion onto the mixer so please excuse the anger, disappointment, sweat, and fear, just enjoy what is presented in your own space and at your own risk because this gets a little loud. The song selection reflects some of the emotional and mental cues for this mix so if you listen closely you might be able to read my mind. Please enjoy.

Paul White: Rapping With Paul White (The Room Below Versions) [Album]

Here is a very unusual project: an album of electronic covers of a recent hip hop album: Paul White's 'Rapping With Paul White'. Henry Keen (aka The Room Below) took inspiration from the original songs, replaying everything on drum machines and synths, and writing interludes of his own to give the record a unique flavour: a heavy analogue electronics rap record with not a sample in sight.

Marley Marl presents Classic Recipes: LL Cool J's Mama Said Knock You Out [Video]

In the first installment of Marley Marl 'Classic Recipes,' he shows you how he produced the beat for the 1991 Grammy award-winning chart-topping single 'Mama Said Knock You Out' by LL Cool J. He discusses the collaboration and the production process of the track, as well as methods and tools that were used, including the Akai MPC60 and E-Mu SP-1200, the preferred sampler and drum machine for most hip hop producers at that time. In this video Marley Marl loads the samples into his new production weapons of choice, Ableton Live and the Akai APC40, including bits of Sly And The Family Stone's 'Trip To Your Heart' and James Brown's 'Funky Drummer'.

Throughout the video, the DJ legend gives invaluable advice and tips for young and up and coming producers, and he concludes the episode by offering a mixing technique for Ableton Live users and lovers of 808 kicks and other bass-heavy kick drums, and an alternate rock version of the song with never before heard lyrics recorded by LL in 1990.

Dust & Grooves: A Photography Book About Vinyl Collectors [Video]

Dust & Grooves is a photo and interview project documenting and exalting vinyl records, the people who love them, and the musical heritage they carry.

With a website launched in October 2008 by Brooklyn-based professional photographer and vinyl addict Eilon Paz, D&G profiles individual collectors from all over the world in their natural environment – usually at home with their personal collections. Each subject is interviewed in depth about their devotion to vinyl, then each conversation is paired with a beautiful series of portrait photographs by Eilon that capture the heart and soul of this passionate avocation. Together, words and images tell the story of the love affair between collector and collection, and preserve a record of music that otherwise might be lost.

In this case its the worldwide web global reactor. My mom puts it like this - welcome to the twilight zone-fight club style!
