DJ Rahdu – Iconoclast: Tributes & Remakes by Bama Lovesoul on Mixcloud

From DJ Rahdu:

As the month of February began I read a FB status requesting the favor of no mixes or reworks of Dilla's work this year. Discontent with the trendy and overwhelming amount of Dilla output this time of year, I could understand the intent of the statement but disagreed with the sentiment. To many, Dilla is a mark to be achieved or surpassed and recreating or remixing his work may be just the tool to help them find their own sound. Just as Dilla admired Pete Rock and probably tried his hand at flipping some of Pete's works, these producers/singers/MCs are showing their love and respect to a fallen hero. Since his passing, I've collected a large number of hours of Dilla tributes, jacks, remakes, flips, etc and here is my hour long mix of these reworks. Please enjoy!

From E Da Boss:

I made this mix in celebration of two things. First is the third anniversary of Oakland’s 45 Sessions, where I have been a resident since the beginning and where Rhettmatic and Shortkut (Beat Junkies) are coming to play this month. Second is my debut at LA’s Blazing 45s with Rich Medina.

The mix is all about moving your feet and dancing. No quick mixes or scratch tricks going on here, just 100 percent booty shaking sweet soul jams.

DJ Jaycee presents Sky High: The Mizell Edition [Mix]

From DJ Jaycee:

As a kid, my Mom and Dad played a lot of these Mizell Brothers-produced jams around the crib so I just wanted to do a mix that they could rock with. A lot of these tunes have been heavily sampled over the years (if you listen close enough, you'll notice that I reference a few of the joints that do so) but most importantly, I REALLY love these songs because they're dope in their own right. This mix was originally done in July '08, so if you've heard it before it's all good. If you haven't though, I suggest you download it with the quickness.

DJ Rhettmatic presents WhutUpDoe (v.3): J. Dilla Tribute [Mix]

From DJ Rhettmatic:

Today is February 7th, 2013, which means it is the birthday of one of the greatest Hip Hop Producers of all time, James Yancey aka J Dilla. Today he would've been 39 years old. It is incredible that every month of February for the last 8 years that Dilla's life & music is celebrated around the whole world. It is also bittersweet because he was taken from us in such an early age when it looked like he was really get ready to take the world by storm. I've been very lucky & blessed to be part of his close circle of friends when he moved to Los Angeles. Not only was he was a talented individual and one of the nicest & humble guy I ever met, he was also a private person… definitely don't want to get on his nerves…LOL!!

I know there's a lot of Dilla Tribute mixes out there, and me personally, I don't think there's anyone that can out top a Dilla mix that was made by my fellow Beat Junkie & the 3rd Member of Jaylib, the Funky President himself, J.Rocc. The only one who can possible come close would our good friend, Houseshoes. I already made 2 mixes a few years ago, but I was inspired again to work on another one. I tried to finish the mix late last night but got real tired….I just finally finished this mix before the day was over. I definitely was trying not to repeat songs like I did on my previous Dilla mixes but sometimes you can't help going back to his classic catalogue. Anyways, here's my third installment of my "J Dilla Whatupdoe" mixes, a 30 minute vibe mix. Unfortunately, we also lost another Musical legend a few days ago….Mr. Donald Byrd, and i actually added the original 'Think Twice' song to the mix as well as Dilla's version, in paying homage to the legendary musician.

Rest in Peace to Donald Byrd…..and Rest In Peace & Happy Birthday to one of the greatest….J Dilla.

Ta-Ku: 25 Nights For Nujabes [Album]

Endeavoring to craft one beat per day to create 50 Days For Dilla was quite ambitious, but the uber-talented Ta-Ku was more than built to handle the heat. This year he embarked on a similar mission, this time paying tribute to the late, great Seba Jun (and he even blended the two together on Night 25).

DJ J-Finesse: Songs & Remixes Inspired By...THE G.O.A.T. (J Dilla) [Album]

From DJ J-Finesse:

With February 7th being the born day of the late-great J-Dilla, I wanted to produce something to show my gratitude, love and admiration for a man who has really changed my life. Although, I encountered his music for such a short time, its lasting impact has really helped develop me musically, professional and personally.

What you are about to hear is my tribute to whom I call 'The Greatest of All Time', G.O.A.T. for short. I hope that you pull from it whatever Dilla vibes you can as I made this project with him as the sole inspiration. I really miss this man's music and he is greatly forever going to be missed.

Professor Eddy: Black Gold From The Capitol Vaults [Mix]

Black Gold From The Capitol Vaults by Professor Eddy on Mixcloud

From Professor Eddy:

I went down to the vaults of Capitol Records and digged these tunes up! Some were easy catches, others were more hard to find, like the one from David McCallum. He is well-known for his part of medical examiner Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard on NCIS, but he was also a musician in the 1960s. McCallum recorded four albums for Capitol Records with producer David Axelrod. His most famous piece today is ‘The Edge’, which was sampled by Dr. Dre as the intro and riff to the track ‘The Next Episode’. I selected 'House of Mirrors' from McCallum's album 'It's Happening Now'. Enjoy that one and the others that I found in the cellars of Capitol Records!

Jazzcat: Mo Wax Special [Mix]

Mo Wax special by Jazzcat on Mixcloud

From Jazzcat:

Mo Wax was a UK based record label owned by James Lavelle, who founded it in the early 90's (when he was 18) with Tim Goldsworthy. The label came to recognition for being at the forefront of trip-hop, turntablism and alternative rap during the mid-90s. Mo Wax is also responsible for bringing attention to the graffiti artist Futura 2000 by using his artwork on many of its releases in the early to mid-90s. The original Mo Wax logo as used on the early releases was designed by UK graphic artist Swifty, but the label grew their reputation by featuring artwork contributions from Futura 2000, Robert Del Naja (from Massive Attack) and Req 1. I've always been a big fan of this label and I hope you will like this selection of my favourite Mo Wax tunes........thank you for listening!

Chase Moore: Shaken Not Stirred [Beat Tape]

Chase Moore has crafted some very clever cuts for a number of California artists, in addition to producing for Raekwon and Slug among others. However, for all that he has contributed on a mainstream level, it is projects such as this 007-inspired beat tape that truly translate his talent - and not because Bond-based tapes are necessarily new, but because he embellishes them in a way that improve upon the originals (a rare talent these days).

Greg Wilson: Early 80s Floorfillers (January 1983) [Mix]

From Greg Wilson:

A fascinating insight on how the fading Jazz-Funk scene gave way to the emerging Electro-Funk movement in the early 80’s, ‘Greg Wilson’s Early 80’s Floorfillers’, marks the 30th anniversary of when these tracks first appeared. Compiled from his record lists of the time, and unfolding month by month, Greg Wilson counts down the Top 10 Floorfillers played at his venues during the key years of ’82 and ’83. Featured, most notably, on his Tuesday sessions at Wigan Pier and Wednesday gatherings at Legend in Manchester, the most cutting-edge weekly black music nights of the era, these were the clubs most associated with the evolving Electro-Funk sound.

The majority of music played on the black scene in the UK was initially only available on import, mainly out of New York during this period, with the club nights described as ‘upfront’, meaning that the DJ’s were way ahead of the curve – what they played now, others played later, or not at all. Without these DJ’s, many now classic dance tracks would never have become UK hits (many without enjoying similar crossover success in the US) – the reason they were released here in the first place was because these specialist DJ’s were breaking them via the underground.

Things would change in a big way during those 2 years; we were entering the hybrid age for dance music, and the oncoming House and Techno and Hip Hop directions would all owe a huge debt to this era of dance alchemy and groove experimentation.
