Hevehitta: The Writers Bench [Mixtape]

hevehitta_thewritersbench_2012

Inspired by the movie 'Style Wars', I (Hevehitta) have decided to drop a free mix called 'The Writers Bench.' This 15-track mix focuses on the art of graffiti by the way of hip-hop music.

If you are not familiar with The Writers Bench, it was a meeting place located at 149th Street Grand Concourse where graffiti writers would talk graffiti, make plans, sign black books and settle disputes. The main activity was watching art on the passing trains (known as benching). The writers would admire and criticize the latest paintings.

To put my own personal touch on the mix. I have included recorded dialog from classic hip-hop films such as Style Wars, Wild Style and Beat Street.

Meyhem Lauren, KRS-One, Typical Cats, Atmosphere, Futura 2000 and the Artifacts are just some of the artists you will find on this mix.

Enjoy and be educated.

Medusa is about life situations that leave us immobilized; and women who make it difficult to love. While working on our debut album 'The Sunset LP' we often times get side tracked and distracted, as is the nature of creative arts, 'Medusa' is the outcome those random thoughts and unforgettable life experiences. This project is bit more experimental than 'Still Dreaming' but not as ambitious as the 'The Sunset LP' Enjoy.

Bama Love Soul presents Y'All Feel That? Erykah Badu Remixes, Flips & Covers [EP]

bamalovesoul_yallfeelthat_erykahbadu_2012

From Bama Love Soul:

It’s no surprise that this Southern Girl has continued to mystify and amaze us 15 years after the release of her genre busting debut album Baduizm. Not only is she unique, she has continued to push the boundaries on each of her subsequent releases. Closely aligned, it seems, with every musician that matters (she was a core member of the Soulquarians for crying out loud!) she’s always able to create songs that either confirm or confound your musical sensibilities. For this reason, amongst many others, we love the Analogue Girl!
Alas, there are those that feel they can perfect what Badu has done in the studio or just want to add their personal spin to her musical offerings, heck, some have even been commisioned; It’s these remixes, flips and covers that fuel this mix. Y’all Feel That is a collection of some of our favorite tricked out treats, lovingly mixed and offered to you and your mp3 players. Enjoy!

djmrock_thebestofdonnasummer_2012

I’m celebrating the music of another great artist – someone who inspired dance music as we’ve always known it, whether we’re talking about the sexy slower grooves, or straight up techno music. This tape doesn’t have one single scratch technique on it, but I got a pretty serious juggle in there. I turned it around in less than one day. Prepare for some disco, and if you’re not into that, go listen to the Best of the Beastie Boys. Donna just passed yesterday, and I hope I can do her music justice. Enjoy an hour of the lovely voice of Donna Summer and have a happy family day weekend.

DJ Rhettmatic: Excerpts From The SP1200, Volume 1 (1994-1998) [Mixtape]

djrhettmatic_excerptsfromthesp1200_2012

Ah yes, the E-MU SP-1200…..the vintage drum machine sampler that has been used on a lot of classic Hip Hop albums. I remember when i first got my SP back in 1991, when they reissued the SP1200 with the black finish. The original version had grey finish; i bought mine for $2000…..that was a lot of me back in the day. This machine was made popular by producers such as Marley Marl, Dr. Dre, DJ Muggs, Large Professor, Q-Tip, Madlib, & of course Pete Rock...i was inspired to get one because all of my favorite producers during the late 80's & early 90's were using this to make all the classic Hip Hop songs that we all know & loved so well. My first official SP1200 beat on wax was the Key-Kool & Rhettmatic's 'E=MC5' song with Ras Kass, LMNO, Meen Green, & Voodoo…..

Speaking of Pete Rock, this particular music project was inspired by a picture taken two years ago, which had Pete, Babu, & myself, that posted up on Instagram a few weeks ago. When i posted up the picture, i went to my home studio and was just staring at my SP1200…..I haven't used that machine in such a looooong time. On some sh*t & giggles, i decided to hook up the SP and just listen to old beats; some were pretty dope, & others i was thinking 'what the hell was i thinking?!'…haha! Just for archive purposes, I decided to dump the beats on to Protools.

Fast forward to 2012, listening to these beats definitely brought back memories. Obviously, most of these beats haven't seen the light of day…..some of them I tried to shop them, but they mostly ended up in the archives when i switched to the Akai MPC 2000. I currently use the Propellerhead 'Reason' music software & It's very interesting to hear my own progression in music production…..After listening to my old SP1200 beats & going down memory lane, i thought it would be cool if people had a chance to listen themselves…..well, I wouldn't say I was excited to put it out….LOL! I took some Instagram pictures of my little session, & people were leaving comments saying that they wanted to hear them. Because of their 'influence', i decided to hear them. Luckily, my friend FWMJ of RappersIKnow was willing to help me out & help disperse the music into the worldwide web (he was actually one of the people on Instagram that encourage me to share the music).

So now, what you hear right now is some of old stash of SP1200 Beats that were made from 1994-1998. I actually recorded the beats straight from the SP1200, without any additional mixing…..just straight arrangement, & added scratches & sound effects to keep a little things interesting. What you hear is straight, raw, gritty, 12-bit texture, mono SP1200 beats with the ringy tone samples & smacking drum sounds. I hope you enjoy listening to them (& hopefully you're not making fun of them) while walking down memory lane with me. Who knows, if the response is positive, i might put out more beats to listen….& maybe actually make some new ones too!

Miya Bailey: Outside The Lines (Trailer) [Video]

The film is the brainchild of one of the world's most widely recognized black tattoo artists, Miya Bailey. For over 5 years the idea has always been in his head to create a film that not only sheds light on the artform, but also allows the artform to be represented in the right way. There are a lot of stigmas attached to black tattoo artists and their side of the culture; ranging from a lack of creativity to overall poor quality of work. This in turn has lead to artists from other backgrounds and those in the black community choosing to take their business elsewhere in search of quality work.

The primary purpose here is education, basically if people knew better they would do better. There are dozens of black artists who are trained and highly skilled in any form of tattooing one could ask for. Once people watch this film we really want them to have a better understanding of their options and a deeper appreciation for the art form.

Hevehitta & DJ Unexpected: Shaolin Rescuers [Mixtape]

hevehitta_djunexpected_shaolinrescuers_2012

On February 27th, Hevehitta and DJ Unexpected released Duel of the Iron Fists, a concept mixtape starring Ghostface Killah and DJ Premier. The mixtape combined Ghostface Killah’s epic wordplay over DJ Premier’s boom-bap backdrops. The mixtape even included a break beat and sample section for said artists.

Shaolin Temple Strikes Back is a continuation of Duel of the Iron Fists but with more Wu-Tang Clan members and a new producer, the Alchemist. Shaolin Temple combines the Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game of the Wu-Tang Clan with the underground flavor of the Alchemist. A 20 minute Alchemist break section is also featured.

These two titles combined give you Shaolin Rescuers.

The first of its kind, Shaolin Rescuers holds two different projects on one CD. If you have been following the Hevehitta and DJ Unexpected catalog for quite some time, you know they are not afraid to try different ideas with their projects. Shaolin Rescuers also features the famous Shaw Brothers movie dialog – all recorded by Hevehitta and Unexpected – that you have heard on previous Martial Arts Mixtapes. This is a mixtape movie presentation, with Hevehitta and DJ Unexpected as the directors.

Enjoy and be educated.

Pharrell Williams: Dissecting Creativity (pt. 1) [Video]

As Pharrell Williams touched down in Hong Kong last week to attend Carrera Presents Liberatum Hong Kong International Festival of Culture, the multi-faceted creative had a chance to sit down with HBTV amidst the pre-opening for Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin Hong Kong to converse about his personal interest in art as well as his creative process. With a resume that spans a vast range of creative mediums from music, film scoring, industrial design, sound design, and fashion design, Pharrell is one of the few individuals who are able to balance a diversity of projects while seamlessly maintaining consistency in his own identity as each endeavor unfolds. In our first colloquial dialogue with Pharrell — of which there will be an eventual two parts — he touches on everything from art, managing projects, his thoughts on the difference of American and Asian cuisine as well as sharing memories from his past experiences with NIGO.

Swift Rock, Lean Rock & Skeme Richards: Dream, Mobilize, Execute [Mixtape]

swiftrock_leanrock_skemerichards_mastermobilizexecute_2012

Recently we've been working on an ultimate 90s mix, careful to incorporate select tracks that take us back to a specific place and time, and although Dream, Mobilize, Execute does not focus solely on the last decade of the century, it is easily one of the illest overall mixes we've come across in a minute. Opening with a slew of bangers, Swift, Lean and Skeme succeed by setting their sights strictly on some of the sickest songs of all time.

DJ M-Rock: Best of the Beastie Boys [Mixtape]

djmrock_thebestofthebeastieboys_2012

I dropped a mixtape on Friday called 'Keys Over Kanye' and nobody cared. Then, I read the MCA had passed, felt so sad but the hustler in me kept pushing my new tape. After a few hours, I realized promo-ing my shit was selfish, and had to look into maybe doing a Best of Beasties. It’s only right. Mixtapes come together well when you actually love the artist. RIP MCA aka Adam Yauch and much respect to the Beasties. They went from being the most offensive group when I was 2 feet tall to playing tonnes of instruments and having a long career. This group was old school when the word old school didn’t exist – messy but banging production, a tonne of samples, sillyness inserted everywhere, and lots of that old 70s funk. I’ve had little sleep over the past few days because I committed to getting this out, so I’m going to depart from paragraphs and go into bullets…brrrrap. Here’s a few highlights of the Beastie Boys:

•Never recorded one record to be mainstream yet were the biggest thing when they came out: Their debut was the first hip hop album ever to go #1 on the Billboard 200.
•MCA was the freshest in the group – his voice was super ill, and although he wasn’t as energetic as Ad Rock, he delivered that cool but rugged voice nicely everytime. The other 2 occasionally annoy me, but on stage, they hold it down better than MCA in my opinion.
•These guys are humble. They’re legends yet they still talk about having studios to work in as a blessing and that rapping is their dream.
•Paul Revere is Run from Run DMC’s idea. He came late to the studio, so they were waiting outside for him and then he shows up, screaming out the words. What an amazing story.
•They’re the original hipsters, except it’s not a trend, they’re dressing or acting a certain way, because they are grown kids and really don’t give a **** what ppl think.
•When they did 'Get It Together' with Q-Tip (whose favourite album is 'Paul’s Boutique' btw)., nobody could front on them – that was a DJ Premier level beat with a nasty hook…10/10. Turns out the break is real mooged out on some uptempo Dilla shit.
•When DJs were obsolete, they brought out Mix Master Mike at the MTV Awards in 1997 and destroyed it with him – Rappers don’t really support hip-hop culture like this, and usually if they do, they’re soft. They actually killed that gig.
•There’s not enough time, there’s so much I can say about these guys.
•Lastly, even though they haven’t been in their prime for a while, it’s sad to see MCA go, and probably take the band with him. When their music is on, it’s fun, it’s conscious, it’s innovative and always classic still. RIP MCA and enjoy the mix.
•The mix is an hour long, and somehow I got it done in 3 days. I’m kind of a monster with the Macbook, I can’t front, so don’t front.
•Now that I did my due diligence, get my 'Keys Over Kanye' tape that I dropped on Friday. It’s Alicia Keys’ vocals over Kanye beats and together they sound incredible. Trust me, get it.
