It's good to see TM continue to come up. Sorely underratted, his most recent projects are definitely worth a listen.

Rammellzee

rammellzee_art

The artist who introduced Jean Michel-Basquiat to the A Train and who originated the styles of others, such as MF Doom and Cypress Hill, has passed.

He was an eccentric, outsize figure almost never photographed without wearing one of the elaborate science-fiction inspired masks and costumes that he made along with the sculpture and paintings that became the mainstays of his career in later years. He fashioned himself as an urban philosopher, whose overarching theory, which he called Gothic Futurism, posited that graffiti writers were trying to liberate the mystical power of letters from the strictures of modern alphabetical standardization and had inherited this mission in part from medieval monks.

They just do not make them like this anymore...

Frank Ramz & The Menahan Street Band "Make The Road By Walking"

frankramz_menahanstreetband

The Clusterfunk Collective blog was not even in existence when we originally heard this tape, but it is well-worth a post (better late than never, right?) The Menahan Street Band has an incredible sound, very curious yet sultry. Add the lyrical skills of Frank Ramz to the mix and this is the end product. Enjoy!

The Art of Maurizio Bongiovanni

mauriziobongiovanni

Maurizio Bongiovanni’s paintings look like the effects of the past, or perhaps the future making its stamp on the present. But what makes Maurizio’s imagery even more effective is his choice of mundane subjects. Birds – sweet, chirpy, perched – suffering the effects of having fallen through refractive cracks… or their existence stretched as they fall toward some unforseen black hole?

In conclusion...

janellemonae_a

janellemonae_b

Most opening acts are a good warmup for the headliner and not much else. But this Archandroid lit the damn roof on fire! Her performance was second to none, and it's great to see artists doing it for the love again and not just for the pay. Ms. Monae was gracious enough to converse with fans in the merch line, even singing Happy Birthday to one lucky guy. We were stoked to have the chance to meet her and wish her much success.

J*Davey "Boudoir Synema" (Mixtape)

jdavey_boudoirsynema

After watching J*Davey open for Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu earlier this week (and not knowing who they actually were until AFTER they were done performing), we decided to go find some material and give the duo another listen. Good choice, too, because as many have already attested - J*Davey makes some strong music. Enjoy!

Drake x Cookin' Soul "Thank Us Later" (Mixtape)

drakecookinsoul_thankuslater

Drake's debut was solid, but mediocre for someone with his talent. This remix tape by Cookin' Soul, however, does it justice. For those of us who are fans (but not necessarily die-hards) this disc did the trick - it has been in constant rotation since yesterday, not to mention the artwork speaks for itself. Go figure...

Nike presents "Pitch Perfect: Volume 5" (Mixtape)

Photobucket

Few continents are as fluid as North America. From the Panama Canal to the Bering Strait, its borders contain a representation of nearly every imaginable personal history, and its residents seem to share their cultures as freely as the jet stream. The music that comes out of this panoply blurs the lines even more, and few grasp this constant flow as well as California’s Chief Boima. As a DJ, producer and writer living in San Francisco, Boima champions the genre-defiant and sonically adventurous with a keen eye, limitless curiosity and sly wit. For this mixtape, even though a majority of the artists live or have lived in the US of A, he’s somehow able to represent as many countries as there are songs, each one bounding back and forth across countries as effortlessly as its creator.

Free Fall

Free Fall is a video made by the freedivers Guillaume Néry and Julie Gautier. You can see Guillaume doing a base jump into Dean’s Blue Hole. They say it’s a fictional and artistic project, they wanted to show another approach to freediving videos. Even Julie, who filmed everything with a Canon 5D Mark II, hold her breath the whole time. The result is awesome.

A sticker found on a trash can at a Washington, D.C., airport last week depicting what appeared to be a suicide bomber is actually the logo of a popular graffiti artist. His fans have plastered his stickers around the world since around 2005.
